*2025 International Day of Peace: Acting Together for a Sustainable Future*

By Dr. GL Ballisum, Dunason Snr. – UN-Eminate

On the 21st of September each year, the world observes the International Day of Peace, a day set aside by the United Nations to strengthen the ideals of peace through global unity, non-violence, and collective action. In 2025, this day arrives at a critical juncture for humanity. Wars, climate change, social inequality, and displacement of millions continue to test the moral and political will of nations.

The 2025 theme, “Acting Together for a Sustainable Future,” calls on the global community to recognize the inseparable bond between peace and sustainability. There can be no peace without justice, no justice without equality, and no equality without a healthy planet to sustain us all.

 *Beyond the Absence of War*

Peace is not merely the silence of guns; it is the presence of opportunity, justice, and dignity. Around the world, young people are demanding change, women are leading grassroots peace movements, and communities are innovating solutions to conflict. Their actions echo the truth that sustainable peace requires inclusive participation.

This year’s focus reminds us that climate resilience, economic fairness, and social harmony are interconnected. A sustainable future can only be achieved when nations act together, putting aside short-term interests for the sake of global survival and human dignity.

*The Urgency of Dialogue and Cooperation*

In an era where distrust and division threaten to fragment societies, dialogue is more vital than ever. Cooperation across borders, faiths, and political divides is not optional, it is essential. Peace thrives where there is trust, and trust is built when leaders listen to the people and when individuals choose empathy over prejudice.

 *Peace as a Daily Choice*

The responsibility of peace does not rest on world leaders alone. Each person is a potential peacemaker. The choices we make in our homes, workplaces, and communities shape the culture of peace. Acts of kindness, fairness, and compassion may seem small, but they are the seeds of a sustainable and peaceful future.

 *A Call to Humanity*

The International Day of Peace 2025 should inspire us to go beyond words and symbols. It must remind us that peace is possible, but only if we act together, with courage, sincerity, and determination.

Let us resolve to build bridges instead of walls, to create hope instead of despair, and to hand over to the next generation not the scars of conflict but the promise of unity. Peace is our common inheritance and our shared responsibility.
